• Both companies must launch their service
without obvious coverage dropouts or they will face significant rollout
delays and uptake resistance.
• There won’t be much competition from other
wireless technologies, but the terrestrial broadcasting industry will
fight to maintain its market share. |

- A Comparative Evaluation of Broadband
Services
(PDF format, 358 Kbytes)
- By John Puetz. There are a growing number of ways to get broadband
connectivity—DSL, wireless, cable, T1/E1, fiber and satellite. This
paper evaluates service offerings, and presents performance data results
from a series of tests performed on broadband services from DSL, cable and
satellite service providers.
-
- Comparative
Approaches in the Economics of Broadband Satellite Services
(PDF format, 90 Kbytes)
- By John Puetz & Mark Dankberg. There are a number of economic,
business and technical considerations in bringing broadband services to the
marketplace using satellite based facilities. This paper is informs the
reader of these considerations as the pertain to market needs, economic
drivers, system performance and service costs trade-offs and considerations.
-
- Waveform Advances
for Satellite Data Communications (PDF format, 64 Kbytes)
- By John Puetz & Mark Dankberg. This paper considers advances in
satellite modem signaling (such as 8-PSK), error correction coding (such as
turbo codes), and interference cancellation techniques (Paired Carrier
Multiple Access – PCMA) to show how they compare in increasing data
transmission speeds and benefiting service economics.
- Smart Networking Techniques in
Implementing Broadband Hybrid Wide Area Networks
(PDF format, 413 Kbytes)
- By John Puetz & David Blanks. Hybrid networks,
comprising satellite, fiber-cable and wireless-local-loop technologies, are
becoming more commonplace as service providers and enterprise IT managers
seek out the best-fit network implementation for Internet access, wide area
networking and virtual private networks. Economics and performance
factors demand that hybrid systems be investigated and seriously evaluated.
This paper presents two case studies of hybrid networks that have been
implemented in the past year.

of Hybrid WANs (PDF format, 1.2 Mbytes)
- Conference presentation of above paper.
Intelligent
Satellite Overlay Networks Enable Quick Deployment of Future Internet
Services
(PDF format, 419 Kbytes)
- By
John Puetz, former director of ViaSat's
StarWire product and business
development - While wildly successful, the true power and
impact of the Internet has yet to be fully realized. New push, streaming,
and IP multicast technologies can distribute audio, video and real-time
events with true worldwide coverage. The existing paradigms in radio and TV
broadcasting, newscasting, live event coverage, and software and information
distribution will change as a result. Yet deploying these technology
advancements into the existing Internet backbone and multi-layered wired
infrastructure will take time. Overlaying the many layers of the existing
wired Internet infrastructure with satellite enabled services can deploy
these new services much more rapidly.
- Comparative
Approached in Implementing Wide Area Satellite Networks
(PDF format, 532 Kbytes)
- By
John Puetz, former director of ViaSat's StarWire product and business
development - The tremendous growth of Internet and intranet applications
has placed greater demands on traditional LAN/WAN connectivity methods.
Various satellite-based solutions have emerged to address this need for
greater speed and higher capacity in geographically-dispersed,
multi-server
networks. This paper helps users and buyers of satellite systems to
understand the fundamental tradeoffs and equips them to make informed
decisions for their application, including a new approach to demand-based
wide-area networking.
- Wireless Internet
and Multimedia Connections (PDF format, 569 Kbytes)
- By
John Puetz, former director of ViaSat's StarWire product and business development -
Everyone is aware of the tremendous growth in Internet and multimedia
applications. And just as new software has an insatiable appetite for more
computer memory and disk space, information consumers have an unending
desire for vast amounts of information, at a faster access pace than ever
before. This paper discusses how you can use satellite to provide
efficient, high-bandwidth connections for Internet and multimedia access.
